Italian, Russian, and Albanian are still around NYC. Italian definitely is still in North Jersey and Philly also. Russian is still in SF. I'm assuming the Chinese are also in SF and NYC but idk enough to say.
I’m curious if there’s still any cities or neighborhoods within them where organized crime still has a large presence. When I say organized crime I mean the Italian Mafia or Russian Mafia or the triad or yakuza or groups similar to those, not low level street gangs and cartels. I doubt there’s too many or any cities, but there’s gotta be some neighborhoods where organized crime has enough of a presence to be noticeable by the average person. Kind of a weird question I’m just curious about how much organized crime has declined.
Aggressive police investigations, the death of Omerta, and the general integration of Italians into "white society" has turned the Mafia into a shell of it's former self.
Here in Philadelphia, brutal infighting in the 80s and early 90s helped spell the end of the Mafia as well. Their former stronghold neighborhoods in South Philly are also now much more Latino/Asian/general White then strictly Italian/Italian-American. They are definitely still around though. Joey Merlino, the boss in Philadelphia, just went back to prison for a few years. Although he was living in South Florida for the last couple years, he was still reportedly running the family from down there.
