This is pretty much how I would rank them as well.
The Blue Ridge pretty much reaches its 'peak' in NC/TN, and the Shenandoah Valley gives the #3 spot to VA.
Points to western NC for Asheville and the other numerous and beautiful mountain communities it has as well.
Location: northern Vermont - previously NM, WA, & MA

Pretty well ranked, generally when I think of Appalachian culture, it's from the Allegheny's in PA and anywhere south of that. West Virginia is a standout in that aspect, but agree with the top 3 overall ranking. The Catskills, Berkshires, Green and White Mountains are a different dynamic culturally but nonetheless part of the Appalachian chain. Since Mt. Katahdin is at the end of the trail, I'd rank Maine a lot higher, certainly higher than Massachusetts and Maryland for this mountain alone.
For me it's the views, the parks, and the Blue Ridge Parkway, IMHO, is the best in NC.
Yes, this; plus, NC and TN seem to celebrate their mountain culture more than any other Appalachian state IMO.
I'm having a bit of trouble understanding SC's relatively high ranking in this thread, as the Blue Ridge barely skirts its northern boundary.
