Best? Probably Alaska. In the lower 48, that's a tougher call. My personal preference is the Pac. NW, but I wouldn't argue with anyone who says California or the Southwest.

The western half of the country is far and away more interesting scenery-wise.

I find the I-80 corridor in western Nevada and California to be very rewarding: it has high desert, alpine forest, mountains, Mediterranean hills, flat plains, and the coast all in a couple hundred miles.

If it has to be a single type of scenery, I like the Southwestern desert, especially the rock arches in southeast Utah. That general region would be hard to place anywhere else on Earth.

I agree when it comes to natural scenery alone. But when you mix in the low mountains, fall foliage, creeks and streams, and rocky coastlines with historic homes, covered bridges, barns, and quaint towns New England can really give the western US a run for it's money.

Plus when the west turns dry (i.e. any month not named April/May) the brown can get old real quick.

But I'm generally happy with most scenery.

From my experience, the top 10 states with the OVERALL best geographic scenery, that I have been to, are these:

BEST:
10 Utah
9 Virginia
8 Tennessee
7 North Carolina
6 Colorado
5 Idaho
4 Wyoming
3 Hawaii
2 Arizona
1 California

For fun, the overall bottom 5 OVERALL, in my opinion:

5 Mississippi
4 Kansas
3 Indiana
2 Louisiana
1 Illinois

Hawaii
Alaska
AZ/NM/CO/UT
New England
Pacific Northwest

Underrated pick for South Dakota. There was something about the rolling prairie, big skies, and Black Hills that I found intriguing and quite beautiful.
