Demographics

Jackson's Black community resides in a large portion of the city proper. Out of 111 sq mi, 89 sq mi of mostly Black neighborhoods. This is a tremendous difference from the 1970s when the city was 50 sq mi and the Black community consisted of 15 sq mi ( concentrated in Farish District , Half of Westside, & Large section of Northwest side). In relation to the metro population , near even distribution with the city proper having 49% share & outside the city at 51%.

Jackson's metropolitan area contains over 25% of the state's Black population. Followed by the Gulf Coast metro at 7.7% & Hattiesburg at 3.8%. These 3 metros combined have about 37% of Mississippi's Black population. All 3 metros are located in the southern half of the state ( 601 / 228 area codes). Additionally, the 601 have 6 of the 16 tier cities & a plurality of the Black populous.

The 662 area code have 8 tier cities but 2nd overall in regards to populous and 228 have 2 tier cities with the lowest populous.

Black population is spread out over many cities & towns especially in the Delta but lowest presence in the northeast corner near the Tenn/Bama border & some areas of the coast.

A small community in that last area, which is where Oprah's man grew up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitesboro,_New_Jersey
You have to realize that most of the towns in NJ are very small in area. so while those towns all have large black populations, the towns themselves are quite small. See below for the geographic spread of blacks in NJ.

As you can see, most are in close proximity to Philadelphia, NYC or NJ's own cities.
If you look by census tract, you'll see that the black population is mostly concentrated in certain areas of those cities as well.

Again, that doesn't mean that there aren't places in other parts of the state that have a substantial to high black population/percentage though. That just shows where the population is concentrated, but most, if not all states have such concentrations to some degree. Even MD, which you can see in the map you posted, has its concentrations as well and it is 3rd in black percentage.

I'm saying something different in terms of finding communities in other parts of the state.

Lotta middle class blacks in Burlington and Willingboro. However the middle class black sin Northern NJ like Maplewood and the like are definitely more 'polished' an more solidly and firmly middle and upper middle class.

I would say that there are more in northern NJ due to having the state's biggest cities.

Would the portions be similar to NYS Black population?

I think it is a little more balanced, as there is a stretch of the state that has the bulk of the population that goes from NE NJ(think Newark, Elizabeth, Paterson, the Oranges, Teaneck, Englewood, Maplewood, etc.) through central NJ(the Brunswicks(particularly New Brunswick, Piscataway, etc.) into SW NJ(Trenton, Camden, etc.).

It is a small, but generally urbanized state. So, I think that plays a part in that.

Some estimated black population numbers for places in the state, Newark: 141,000
Jersey City: 65,000
East Orange: 56,000
Irvington(township, densest predominantly black municipality in the US, 54,233 people in 2.93 square miles): 47,000
Trenton: 43,000
Paterson: 41,000
Camden: 34,000
Elizabeth: 25,000
Plainfield: 21,000
Atlantic City: 14,000
West Orange(township): 13,100
Piscataway(township): 11,300
Roselle: 11,200
Teaneck(township): 11,200

Newark, Irvington, Trenton, East Orange and Roselle are predominantly black. Atlantic City is pluralistically more so.

2018 1-Year ACS demographics estimates came out today.

A couple big surprises in my own state:

Brockton MA came in at 47.7% Black and 30.7% whites. This is not unsurprising if you actually visit the city but is in big contrast that estimates that have been putting the black population at 39-43% and the white population at 31-37% for the past 5 years. The stagnation I was seeing over the years didn’t make sense so this is probably a pretty damn accurate number.

Framingham MA came in at 11% Black which makes sense from casual observation, the fact they have a black mayor and the fact that public schools have been 9-11% black for 20 years. Usually it’s cited as being 6-7% black. There is a 4 percentage +/- though which is annoying for a fairly large city of 72k. This is also only its second census estimates since it became a city and not a town that may lead to some demographic confusion.

Lowell MA. The states 4th largest city with 111k people was 9.3% black which seems accurate. Most reports this decade gave 6-7% figures which seemed really low anecdotally and from school population figures. 22% Asian 19% hispanic and 48% white

Cambridge MA. At one point Cambridge had a fairly large African American population. People that had moved out of Boston into the public housing and tenements in the formerly industrial parts of East and North Cambridge. Cambridge has had several black mayors. Cambridge’s High school was 40% black at its peak around 2005. Cambridge’s Black population peaked at 13-14% of the city in 1990. It had been slowly decreasing and by 2010 it was about 11% black. To my dismay Cambridge MA come in at 7.6% Black today. Most previous estimates in this decade were reporting 9-10% which given that the average house in Cambridge is about 1.2 million dollars seemed high to me. This deflated 7.6% numbers makes a lot of sense seeing as the city has grown from 105k in 2010 and less than 95k in 1990 to 118k today. Almost all of that influx has been Asian. Cambridge’s white population stand at about 58% a decline from 61-62% in 2010 and about 65% in 2000.

Boston Worcester and Springfield showed no significant change or variations in their black populations.

Worcester (pop. 185k) posted a noticeable decline in it white population from 58% to 53%. This follows the trend I had anticipated prior to a year of stagnation then a year where its white share of the population increased. Worcester’s growing diversity is talked about state wide. It was 70% white in 2000.

Springfield (pop. 155k), has however become 48% Latino and 28% white. In 2000 it was 48% white and 28% Latino
Springfield is 42% Puerto Rican overall. It is now noticeably more Hispanic and much more Puerto Rican than Hartford (45% hispanic and 35% Puerto Rican overall).

In Rhode Island, Providence (pop. 179k) is now 14.8% black. A slight uptick over the 13% figure I widely saw. If anything black people are not leaving providence and some may be coming from the Boston Area or New York Area.
