Arizona or possibly parts of New Mexico sound like the perfect fit. Beware though AZ is increasingly becoming expensive every coming year, it definitely won't remain "affordable" for long.
The reasons I like Arizona over texas is one: texas, or at least all the areas I've been, is very flat.. flat, straight roads aren't really fun unless you like drag racing between stop lights.
Two: arizona may be hotter. But texas gets HOT! I'm not gonna start the dry vs humid heat debate. But I feel like it's just a competition of who's high heat sucks the worst! Also texas gets some major bad weather when it comes to storms/hurricanes/floods/tornados

Yeah it’s definitely not affordable in Phoenix anymore. Which is sad because many still rank Phoenix as an affordable city. It’s really not, because the pay scales are lower here. When you factor that in, it’s tough.
To afford a 1 bedroom apartment here comfortably so you can afford toys, travel and saving you need to make at least 60k. In the more central areas, try closer to 75k.
That seems true in regards to some of the more popular areas. But it seems to get cheaper on the out skirts. Then there are areas further that are still nice like maricopa for example that may not be an epicenter of shopping/entertainment, but can be pretty nice with affordable living. And of course there are sketchy or more desolate areas where it's even cheaper..
This is why Arizona is still ranked as affordable. Those aspects of cheaper living are pretty hard to come by in other big cities
