I will be driving an SUV with AWD from Tampa, Fl to San Diego in early Feb 2020. Which route is the safest to avoid winter? I do not have snow tires but I do have awd, will that be enough? Which areas traveling on the most southern routes will I have to watch out for? What is Texas like in February? I would probably have to drive through Houston, San Antonio and El Paso. Any advice, suggestions are very much appreciated.

Barring a freak winter storm you probably will be OK with just AWD. It does get cold in February in places so there could be morning icy spots. The 877 mile drive through Texas would probably send me over the edge.
I-10 all the way to I-8. Most of the drive will have minimal ice and snow. If there is noticeable ice, just drive a little bit slower and cautiously avoid the patches as much as possible. The key is appropriate speed and not making sudden stops or turns. It might be a good idea to travel through ice prone areas (which is hardly any) during the day.
Yep, I-10 in any weather. Because it is the shortest route, and probably the least likely to have winter weather issues. Might buy some No-Doze for the Texas stretch!
And you will see absolutely nothing. And you can't legally stop, even slow down below 60, except every 100 miles at a rest area (if it's open) or every 25 miles at just another identical exit ramp, many of which have no services nor living residents.
But you can make it in 34 hours! Happy driving.[/quote]
Thanks everyone for all the info! I am a single senior lady and have 30 winters in Norway behind me! I do have a lead foot so I appreciate the cautions of slowing down! Fortunately, I have 4 friends to visit along the way and 2 are in Texas I will have my dog with me and will be in no hurry! I am driving from Oceanside, CA late Nov to Tampa, so will have a bit of experience by the time Feb. comes around
