It does have the word South in its name and it has the most central place in this country.

I say southern, a bit less southern than Mississippi a bit more southern than Alabama. After all it has "south" in its name right lol.

Our motto in SD...at least we aren't North Dakota! :-)

I would say Southern, but no Southern state would put up a giant bust of Lincoln.

I have family in SD, and I used to live in MN. Most would no doubt consider it a Northern State. I think the better question is weather it's considered Western or Mid-Western. The Missouri river makes it a tale of two states in a way.
