Largest Cities without TIER ONE pro sports (relocation, land)

They wouldn't have to since it's already there, so.....
As a point of comparison to Richmond building a brand new arena, it seems relevant. Greensboro’s situation would be akin to slowly expanding Richmond Coliseum over a decades-long period.
Louisville obviously has one of the most rabid college basketball fanbases around, so probably not compatible. But KC and Quebec seem to fit, so there is that.
The only cities on there that make sense IMO are Portland and Charlotte (or Carolinas in general). Other cities seem way too iffy of markets to support MLB, which has the most games of any of the "big 4" sports. Montreal has a big market on its side, but past horrible attendance and lack of public funds is a big problem.

I agree with this but wonder about Montreal. Attendance was bad historically, but Jeffrey Loria was the most recent owner before the MLB took over and not one fanbase of the teams he has owned has liked him. I wonder if we are penalizing their attendance issues to much. It also seems like of the cities commonly listed; the MLB seems to want Montreal the most. Especially since the Ray's have received permission to play some of their home games in Montreal.

Seattle is far and beyond the best potential market for a new NBA team, but it looks like it will have to be a relocation. Candidates may be the Suns, Pelicans, Grizzlies, and even the Kings (again!). This article is a couple of years old, but for the most part still stands...
I agree with this but wonder about Montreal. If Montreal has a real stadium deal in place, not some fake proposal like when Loria was the owner of the Expos, they will get a team, either a relocated Rays team or an expansion team.

The Kings just opened a new arena 3 years ago and the Suns just signed a deal with the city or county to renovate their arena yet again, so those two teams aren't going anywhere anytime soon. I would say the best chances for Seattle to get a relocated NBA team would be Memphis or New Orleans. It all comes down to leases and if either the Grizz or Pelicans want to bolt.

Thanks for that. As you can tell, I don't follow this subject religiously, but I still say Seattle is #1 in play for a relocation.
I just don't look at soccer as a tier one sport in the US.....yet. You don't see the coverage, name recognition, and most people don't have a clue, the names of the teams. Not a clue. That's not "major."
Soccer is the fastest growing team sport in America. It's worked it's way up to tier one status---->it is still behind the top four if you have to put them in sequential order, but it isn't far behind hockey, which itself is nowhere near as popular as football, baseball, or basketball...

The city of Richmond isn't trying to lure a major league team. It's really as simple as The Coliseum was crumbling and outdated, and the city needs a new venue for sports and entertainment...
Richmond is the premier city in Virginia, not having a premier arena for sports and entertainment hurt Richmond over the past decade with major traveling acts and events...

I was reading that article last week, after reading this thread haha. However, I don't believe it mentions Memphis or the Grizzlies as candidates to relocate. I think their lease in the FedEx Forum lasts through 2026 or 27, and the ownership issues with them was resolved last year. I would think they would stay in Memphis a while.
Seattle needs a team for sure. I also think Kansas City could use one, but that's been mentioned for years.
