Picked a few random cities with small boundaries and big images.

Just a reminder, "city limits" mean the political and geographical boundaries that correspond to the name of the city in the poll.

"Major attractions" would be something recognized all around the country-a sports team, a university, a cultural institution such as a museum, markets, etc.

Out of these, definitely San Francisco:

Golden Gate Bridge (half of it, anyway)
Fisherman's Wharf
Haight-Ashbury
The Castro
The Presidio
Cable cars
Chinatown
Lombard St.
Golden Gate Park

Cleveland probably has the fewest; I can't think of anything the average person (i.e. not a City-Data-ite) would enjoy seeing there other than the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.

Well, Cleveland would have NBA, NFL, MLB, and a world class theatre district right in the city. For some people that would beat out SF.

These are mostly neighborhoods....I get it, people have heard of them and visit them. Might be a little too vague to qualify.

It's kind of like all those tourist social media posts tagged "Dumbo, Brooklyn", and its a picture of an empty alley with a bridge in the distance. Not really sure that's an attraction despite tourist traffic.

Most of the Cleveland museums and orchestra are superior to any of the same things in these other cities. Playhouse Square is also appealing to likely the same demographic. West Side Market is certainly better than any of the other markets in these cities. Average person? I'm not sure, you might be right. But does Pittsburgh or Minneapolis really have more recognizable things than Cleveland does?

Pittsburgh has-

MLB
NHL
NFL
Andy Warhol Museum (largest single artist museum in the U.S.)
University of Pittsburgh
Carnegie Mellon University
National Aviary (largest aviary in the U.S.)
Pilot city for driverless Uber
Carnegie Musuems
Duquense Incline (if we can name bridges and neighborhoods in S.F. we can certainly include this)

IMO, Pittsburgh and Cleveland would be in a close fight for the top of this poll. As this thread has proven so far, the average person would be hard pressed to name an actual specific attraction in San Francisco other than the Giants, the wharf, or the bridge (bridges are much more of a feature in Pittsburgh than in S.F., btw).

St. Louis
  • National Blues History Museum
  • Forest Park
  • Museum of Westward Expansion
  • St. Louis Cardinals
  • City Museum
  • Gateway Arch
  • Basilica
  • Washington University
  • Union Station (excellent attraction that is just opening with an aquarium, Observation Wheel and high profile restaurants)
  • A great neighborhood city
  • Bar B Que
  • The Hill (little Italy)
  • 2nd largest Mardi Gras
  • One of Americas drunkest cities with tons of dive and neighborhood bars
  • AB brewery

This is all off the top of my head. I know there is more.

San Francisco by a longshot.

Then Seattle by a longshot.

The other cities have their pluses, but they don't have neighborhoods on Seattle's level and aren't very busy or touristy in general.

This doesn’t address the question posed in the OP.
