Good posts, keep contributating! It seems some of you are worried about crime. One of you even needs a gun to feel safe! cant you relocate to a safer city? Those considering a city, check the crime! If its high, dont relocate there!
I am not worried about the low crime in Oil city and I dont use drugs. Its hard to find another city with low crime, low costs of living, nice big houses for under $50k, lots of shopping, fairly near to other cities and towns, good weather almost all year, nice friendly people, etc. I have searched hundreds of cities and none of them have what Oil city has. Almost all of the Florida cities have too much crime, a worse drug problem than Oil city, miserably hot weather, hurricanes, rude people, unaffordable houses, etc.
Woodsfield is my second option, it has low crime like Oil city, not too bad of a drug problem, good weather and friendly people. House costs are a little higher than Oil city and theres only a handful of houses to choose from. Not much shopping in that town of 3000, the nearest walmart is a 20 minute drive and other big shopping places are 30-60 minutes away. In Oil city, much of the shopping is walking distance or a couple mile drive at the most!
To keep on topic on this thread, yes im very worried about crime in West Palm Beach where I currently live with parents! We live in a gated community and good upscale neighboorhood so we dont see much crime but outside there is tons and tons of crime! I read it on the newspaper all the time about school shootings, drive by shootings, gangs, drugs, arson(ive personally seen a few houses on fire!) car thefts, robberies, etc. Thats my biggest reason I want out! Almost any city has lower crime than my city!

You seem to be such a nice guy. You have always been very nice to me. I've been following your posts for a long time. This is the first time that I have responded to you directly regarding Oil City.
I finally looked up Oil City.
It is a SEVERELY depressed city. When I researched it, I practically started crying. It is that bad.
Now, I wholeheartedly agree that you should move out of Florida. But there are sooo many other places to live.
I know that you are VERY excited about moving there, but sweetheart, you haven't even visited, yet.
We lived in Florida, too. We now live in Knoxville. That area would be much nicer for you. Affordable. Nice young people. Lots to do. You can buy your house there.
I'm not worried about crime in my city. Sounds weird, doesn't it, considering where I live! I try to be aware of my surroundings, and I don't go to ATM machines at 2:00 a.m. I also keep my doors locked. Beyond that, though, I'm not so worried. Then again, I have more to worry about from the residents in my apartment complex than the surrounding neighborhood! Maybe I'm in a state of willful denial, considering that I can't change my situation right now, but I see no point in wasting time worrying about something I have no control over. (Even though I know someone who was followed home from the same market that I shop at; they knocked her down and took her purse! This was in broad daylight, too!)
I don't know but parts of Miami are VERY depressing, I can't believe how bad areas are at night, downright scary! In expensive areas like South Miami and Coconut Grove there are still pockets of poverty that are incredibly bad! Then again in Florida there's South Bay, Immokalee, Belle Glade which are all pretty depressed, yet property values are climbing. How can oil city be worse than those places?
The advice about Tennessee is good, why not check it out first? A couple friends moved to that area and are pleased. But unless you live in South Florida you will never understand the desperation that causes us to want to move ANYWHERE even to a tiny, unpopular town. As for a drug problem...HEY ever heard of MIAMI VICE?

Please rethink this.
Please.
Is the state Tennesse for the city Knoxville? Fortunately theres affordable housing. What do you mean by "depressed" Oil city, something very sad or just no jobs?
Knoxville, TN isnt a bad place. Population 180k, very mild winters with 4 inches snow(Oil city can have over a foot) temperature low is 27 vs. 12 for Oil city. Crime is mid to high 500s in Knoxville, about 160 in Oil city and mid 900s in West Palm Beach. How much of a concern and worry is crime in Knoxville? The distance is 674 miles(as the crow flies) from my city to yours. This is 2/3 way to Oil city.
As for affordable houses, this is what I found. Do they have basements? If not this is something ill be giving up as Oil city houses do have basements! Florida houses have no basements but I was hoping Tennesse houses can have a basement!
Looks like its made of bricks. Small 2 bedroom house but this is something id love and at $52k it could be affordable.
Theres 144 houses in Knoxville, TN at $50k and under. Theres about that many houses in each of the metro cities in Texas for $50k and under.
Knoxville appears to be comparable in price to those big Texas cities. I expect the houses I found above to need a little TLC which ill do and find friends to help me
Again and to pertain to the topic of this thread, im worried about crime in Knoxville, TN. Anyone have crime stats/experience? Can you keep me safe?
Try checking a few other things out about places you are eyeing. I know your single and no kids but look at the demographics of the area schools to get an idea of the poverty level there. You can go to this website (www.publicschoolsreport.com) and look this info up. For instance here are some stats for Oil City, Pa. Not too promising at all.

NeedAffordable, I just looked up the crime rates for Knoxville, Tn.
The site I used bases it on a scale of 1 to 10, one being the lowest crime, ten being the highest.
For violent crime, Knoxville is a 7. The U.S. average for violent crime is a 3.
For property crime, Knoxville is again a 7 and the U.S. average is also a 3.
I also checked the crime rate for West Palm Beach and both violent and property crimes are an 8.
Also, to answer your original question~no, I don't have a fear of crime in my area. (So. Dak.) The city I live in has one of the higher crime rates for the state and violent crime is a 3 and property crime is a 5 using the aforementioned scale.
Hey you thought id never be convinced, I have an eye on Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I made a thread about that. Crime index in C.R is 335, national average is 325. Knoxville has 575 crime! I know to use common sense but the higher the crime, the more likley youll get mugged, robbed or some thug will break in your house or decide he "likes" your car You can be as careful as you want, random crime happens. This is why its important to live in a low crime city/area.
Its true there can be pockets of good and bad areas even in a high crime city and by staying out of the bad areas, staying away from drugs, dont join a gang, be nice to people your odds of being fine greatly increase. But its best to live in an area where there isnt much crime for miles and miles!
