I think the state of New York should be split into two states almost as we geographically view it. The whole mainland of NY should be its own state. I think NYC and Long Island should be a state together and we should just name it Long Island where the counties would be NYC's boroughs and the two Long Island counties (Nassau and Suffolk County). NYC and LI are the NY Metro Area (obviously) and the rest of NY has a couple of different metro areas like Buffalo, Albany, etc.
I only visited one part of the Pacific Northwest, which is Seattle, but I believe Washington and Oregon should cut themselves so that the desert portion of the state is separate from the green part of the state. Portland and Seattle are huge metro areas with greenery and are liberal while the desert portions of the states have small cities. more conservative, and are arid.
Westchester County, Long Island, Hudson Valley, NYC
The reasons for splitting a state are always so ridiculous. "The politics are different." So? "The geography is different?" And? In this ever so divided nation, the last thing we need, are more echo chambers. It's great when a state has a liberal AND a conservative portion. It balances it out more. And if all states had uniform culture, politics and topography it would be BORING. I love that northern Minnesota looks different and feels different from southern Minnesota. It would be lame if it all looked the same. I love how Texas has bayous and deserts in the same state. It's pretty damn neat. And the Florida Keys? Hah. What's next? The upper West Virginia panhandle becomes "Northwest Virginia"? The Connecticut bootheel becomes "East New York"? Come on, now. Talk about stretching it!!!

You do realize that politics are the reasons why states formed in the first place, right? So, politics are not a ridiculous reason. But yes, different geography would be a ridiculous reason.
True, but it's still as big as France, Spain and Germany.
And it was once an independent republic, as is France and Germany (Spain is a monarchy). But then again Vermont, much smaller was an independent Peoples' Republic.
I would definitely not like to see any states split. I don't want more bureaucracy unless we add new territory. Besides this seems to be more of a city vs rural thing. This is going to be the case for the future that there will always be mismatches within states. I think it's fine that cities have to broker with the rest of the state in governance. Otherwise people will feel that their interests are not taken into account.
If people want it different then they should have a fundamental rethink of how governance works. If we try to allow cities to become effectively city-states, then they won't have power to tell the open areas how to do anything. Imagine trying to get anything built when all areas outside of the city are governed outside the liberal cities. If you think there is intransigence now, imagine if they all had their own state and could make it very difficult to build infrastructure in rural territory. Say goodbye to any chance at building a rail system when the only people who support it are in far flung city-states.
