What are some states in which the largest city was eclipsed or outshined by the 2nd largest city?

If we're talking city-proper and not metro area, Hartford is actually the third largest city in Connecticut and it outshines numbers 1 and 2 (Bridgeport and New Haven). You actually make the case that number four (Stamford) outshines them as well, at least from an economic standpoint.

I’m praying to the discussion forum gods that we aren’t referring to city proper here. The whole “Jacksonville is the largest city in Florida” argument is so painful, and misguided.

City-pop is worthless as a comparison metric.

Well I'm not just referring to population but other variables based on things like popularity of just more known.

Barring the NOVA region as a whole, Virginia Beach is VA's largest city, within the Hampton Roads region. Richmond and its metro arguably outshine the larger Hampton Roads region in terms of perception/arts/culture in the minds of many Virginians. It's an ongoing debate.

He might be looking at metro population, where Charleston has been surpassed by Columbia and Greenville. Orlando and Raleigh are more niche type places, where they are very strong in some areas but definitely second (or third) fiddle to most people.

Connecticut's largest city Bridgeport is eclipsed by several others. It's capital of Hartford is its center of government and business yet it the state's fourth largest city by population (1-Bridgeport, 2-New Haven, and 3-Stamford). New Haven and Stamford also eclipse Bridgeport on nearly all metrics except the number of residents.

Bridgegeport is no.1 and largest on number only in CT, number games only on population.

In real life and economics, Bridgeport is outlined by other three cities combined, not sure it will make no.4. Here is the rub, Amtrak acela train stops at Stamford and New Haven, but passes Bridgeport and skip it.

Here is my top three cities in CT: New Haven, Stamford, Hartford. Hartford city can barely compete with the top two, but should beat Bridgeport due to its capitol status and metro of insurance industry in nearby suburbs

The no.4 city in CT is between Bridgeport and Norwalk, or New London, not sure Bridgeport can beat Norwalk easily. Bridgeport train station is bigger station than Norwalk for sure.
