Metro Charlotte - I was born and raised in the western suburbs (Gastonia). Have spent about 50 of my 54 years here. Lived in Orlando and Columbus each for about a year doing research. Lived in the Boston/Cape Cod region about a year and a half (July 2017 - January 2019) helping my wife care for her mother who is battling Parkinson's Disease and Dementia. My wife moved here from the Boston area (Quincey) in the mid-80's. We love it here and plan on staying here for good. My whole family is here. 2 of our 4 adult children were in the military and came back here after they finished. The other 2 want to stay and raise their families here. There's just a very high quality of life here that's attainable for most people. The people are incredibly friendly. Having all of the family ties/closeness here is icing on the cake. There's no reason for us to leave again and no desire to leave. Our ties here are strong and we love it!

A combination of factors led to our decision to move:
Schools were experiencing severe budget issues and cuts in programs
Crime was increasing
With 3 kids we needed a bigger house
Reached a dead end for promotions at work
Hotter and drier weather than I like
Lots of dry grass on hills, few trees
Where we decided to move, now here 26 years:
Great schools
Very little crime
House is over twice as big, as is lot
Weather much cooler and wetter
Daily views of mountains, lakes, woods
Partly because I grew up not far from here, partly because it's about the only place in the nation with the right weather for my situation. The last part is that I have always found employment of some type here (legal and decent only for me) here, no matter what my situation has been.
To be close to my family and because my spouse has golden handcuffs. Her job includes tuition subsidies for our children that are being phased out nationally. So if we move, that perk is gone for good.
Other. I moved away from the Front Range thinking I needed a change. Came back to the Front Range after a little more than a decade in our prior locale because I got tired of living in a scenically boring place where the only redeeming quality was a low cost of living and generic amenities that can be found literally anywhere. Our COL went up, but so did our quality of life.
I moved to DC because my wife’s building a career here. It wasnt my 1st, 2nd or 3rd preference. It didnt take me very long to look for an exit. My wife doesnt like it either, so at least we are on the same page there. The trouble is that some careers are more easily pursued in certain areas. For me as a non-citizen DC isnt that great careerwise as most fed-related jobs require US citizenship which narrows down the options, but my wifes career is linked to government/politics so its trickier. It may well require a “reboot” to get out of DC. Until we figure that out we are stuck here.

I neglected one key point on my earlier reply....my personality (direct, speak my mind, punctual, keep commitments, sarcastic) better suited for East Coast (and more likely to run into the same).

I grew up here, thought about moving but couldn't decide where, worked for some large corporations that afforded me short term work assignments on the coasts, and decided it wasn't really so bad where I was at after all.
Of course in my line of work, the options of relocating stateside have been steadily drying up for the last 20 years and have predominately gone overseas to places where the pay wouldn't make the relocation worth it.
I grew up in Illinois, and while I don't really like the state, I have a life here that I love. I also have a house that I love and great neighbors. It's Mayberry. I would love to live some where else but it's the friendships and all the kids in my life that keep me here.
