Time is money. It would be silly to Drive from Seattle to la. 5 hour total flight time vs two days of driving for a four day weekend.

I never feel walled off from the rest of the country. Usually we take 2-3 weeks of vacation a year, and probably half is spent east of the Rockies (Usually spend some time in the Twin Cities on both sides of the Mississippi, as well as trips every few years to Florida, Texas, and usually one other Great Lakes States). There are direct flights from LAX to just about every major city in the country, so it's never that tough to get anywhere. And for shorter road trips, some of the most interesting cities in the country, as well as many of the country's top National Parks are within a 1 and a half day drive, or a one day drive if you are crazy like some of the posters on this thread.

Minneapolis metro was probably the most isolated metro I've ever lived in, though I didn't feel super isolated. Chicago is the nearest big city 6-7 hours drive away, with a couple of medium sized cities- Milwaukee and Madison an hour or two closer. However, just like LA, Minneapolis has an airport, so it's pretty easy to get to the rest of the country.
