In fact, one factions of the Republic of Texas favored expanding westward...all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Obviously, they decided to join the US, instead.

The Vermont thing was a precursor the the colonies removing themselves from the English Empire in forming the early United States.

One state that WAS a sovereign nation was the Kingdom of Hawaii but California and Vermont were not the same as theeh Republic of Texas...nice try.
OMG, stop digging so deep. It reeks of insecurity. These "facts" mean nothing today. Maybe you needed to be told that. Do you really think anyone but a Texas fanatic cares about this? Do you really think it has relevance in today's world? It's a huge disservice to Houston, when things like this are posted, as relevant.

Why are we debating about Houston? Despite 18 pages of debate, the answer is clear:

NYC
LA
Chicago
DC
SF

I can see your point on California. But Vermont has its own constitution, it’s own currency, and postal service.
It didn’t as long as Texas but it defined itself as a republic before Texas ever did.

..and those are 5 of the 6 cities identified by GaWC as Alpha World Class Cities.

The 6th is Houston and I gave them the nod over Washington DC because Houston is a self sufficient non-governmental city.

But I can definitely agree that the SIX most important/Premiere cities in the US are

NYC
LA
Chicago
DC
SF
Houston

Very subjective and it depends on your criteria. Mine would be:
1. NYC
2. LA
3. DC
4. Chicago
5. San Francisco

Honorable mention - Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, Denver, Miami, Philly, Boston
