There's an old quip about Washington D.C. that goes "First in war, first in peace, last in the American League" based on the famous "first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen" statement about George Washington. This was because the Washington Senators were usually a pretty awful team.

There's a suburb of Milwaukee (Wisconsin, on the topic of Oregon) called Whitefish Bay that's referred to as White Man Bay.

I have read a lot of crazy comments on this site, but you're absolutely right in that no one has ever described Cary as such.

Cary does have a descriptive nickname that I remember locals saying - Containment Area for Relocated Yankees lol

Philadelphia has endless nicknames, descriptions, etc. A popular meme (at this point) to share is the old billboards that say "Philadelphia isn't as bad as Philadelphian's say it is" lol https://digital.library.temple.edu/d...66/default.jpg

Houston was described as a "whiskey and trombone" kind of town in newspapers of the early-mid 1900s.

Is that a misnomer though? Always thought Cary was pricier.

The town of Cary as a whole, especially now, is definitely wealthier/more expensive overall than the city of Raleigh as a whole. But the "Can't Afford Raleigh Yet" moniker stems from the old-timer Inside The Beltline crowd. ITB Raleigh (really; only about 1/3 of the land area of what is technically ITB..but I digress) old-money multi-generational Raleigh natives used to (and in jest; some still do) say that was what Cary stood for because it was just the suburban fringes and not as established in wealth/prominence as those neighborhoods bounded by 440, Hillsborough St, and Capital Blvd.

ITB still sells/rents at a premium and is definitely considered more "exclusive" than Cary; but it is a much, much smaller proportion of the city of Raleigh as a whole than it once was (and that many longtime residents still like to think of it as)

Find someone who graduated from Broughton High School in the 1980s or earlier; they'll have used or at least heard of "Can't Afford Raleigh Yet" in reference to Cary.

Toledo = "Little Detroit"
Detroit = "At least we're not Cleveland"
Columbus = "Cow-lumbus"
Akron = "Capital of West Virginia"
