Mid-sized= Population size under around 3 million metro population.

We all know that big cities like LA, Houston, Chicago, DC and NY have diverse dining scenes. But which mid sized cities have good dining options in all or most categories?

I’m a huge fan of the Portland, OR (population +/- 2.1M) dining scene.

nearby wine country and great beer/breweries to wash food down with. Great Italian, French, Peruvian, Thai, Vietnamese, Steak, Ramen, Continental, Vegan, New American, Mediterranean, food carts, coffee, artisan bread, donuts, you name it.

Providence.

Great Italian, Portuguese, Cambodian, Hispanic Caribbean, West African, traditional new England fare, authentic Irish pub fare, some nice breweries, local staples like hot wieners, dels lemonade, coffee milk and Narragansett.

Never in a million years did I think I would say this, but Orlando is an option. It's dining scene has diversified tremendously the past 10 years or so with cuisines from countries like Colombia, Peru, Vietnam, Laos, Turkey, Iran, India, Pakistan, Phillipines and varying Caribbean cuisines leading the charge. Weaknesses? Yep, definitely Italian regional cuisines, French and real deal Chinese...but otherwise pretty surprising!

I can't think of any Scandinavian restaurants in the Twin Cities (except for that little hole in the wall Finn place on Glenwood Ave.), but I can think of Columbian, Bahaman, Ethiopian, Venezuelan, Indian, Japanese, German, Mediterranean, French, Soul, Lebanese, BBQ, Argentinian, Cambodian, Greek, Afghan...
