Midcoast Maine towns, are you thinking Brunswick, Freeport? I know Rockland/Camden further up, but might be too pricey.

I was thinking Rockland/Camden/Belfast. All of them will be pricier than the interior though. They're all well established and coastal property isn't cheap. If you want affordable and coastal, you'd have to go further up the coast (like beyond Acadia/Bar Harbor). Jonesport, Machias, Lubec, and Eastport may be viable. Eastport in particular is a gem but obviously sort of "out there" in terms of distance from the tourist circuit.
Brunswick is nice, but it's sort of a hybrid college town and commuter community for workers in Portland. I don't know that Freeport matches your description. It's not really scenic, and it's essentially a glorified outlet center/bedroom community. It's definitely big on tourist traffic due to L.L. Bean, but I don't know that it'll give you the peace of mind you get in the wilderness. And each of them would be priced comparably to other suburban Portland towns, so not particularly affordable.
I'm trying to plan a 1-2 month road trip to scope out different places I might end up settling in/around rural New England and PA. I'm 33, have a bachelors in biology, and would be happy doing anything that lets me live somewhere rural even if it's totally unrelated to biology. And by rural, I mean living in a place with a bunch of trees, maybe at the edge of a national forest/state park, can't see your neighbors, maybe don't have neighbors, kind of thing. I live cheaply, but only have a few thousand dollars saved up.
I've traveled a lot in the US, mostly living in my car, and always feel freest out in the forest and the canyons. I've also lived in towns/cities and always feel constricted and numbed.
My long term goal is to build or turn a place into a massive series of immersive art exhibits, like Meow Wolf in Santa Fe or Factory Obscura in Tulsa, and somewhat like Mass MOCA in North Adams. Step one would be to rent a space and create one immersive room with materials from the dump/junkyard and charge an entry fee as a proof of concept in order to attract the funding for more rooms.
Another huge goal on top of that would be to create an art colony where young creative people come to collaborate and make things, with the immersive art exhibits serving as an anchor for income and for displaying work.
I think in order to be able to have the audience required to sustain the space, it would be helpful for this place to not be too too far from some kind of tourist track/area, whether that be Route 1 in Maine, or on the way to the White Mountains, or something like that.
I love being in nature as well as creating weird crazy art, and I know this is a totally crazy dream, but, what the hell, I'd rather fail at it in the country than work towards it for a decade in the city and fail anyway.
Very open to any/all suggestions about places where it might make sense for me to try this! Thank you!
For instance, a community such as Geneseo comes to mind with its good state college and it is only about 10-15 minutes from the park. It is also about 35-40 minutes from Downtown Rochester. So, you can get those that visit the park, are affiliated with the college and people from the immediate Rochester area.
What also makes that location interesting is that you are also minutes from Ithaca and right near I-81.

My immediate thought was look towards the Berkshires. Surrounding but remote communities around North Hampton would be ideal, I'd think. Mass MOCA might detract from your goal, however.
I've always thought of VT as the state in the Northeast with the most art/hyper local progressive types. Ample room to roam in VT.. Maybe somewhere in the Green Mountains?
Seems like NH and ME would have much of the same, just not sure if you could attract the same level of attention from local communities as in VT. Totally a guess.

Thanks, yeah I'd hope that Mass MOCA would just mean a lot of people interested in that kind of thing would be in the area, but maybe they'd only be choosing one or the other, dunno. Definitely a cool, artsy, rural spot though, thanks!
