There's obviously cities with worse reputations than others (LA, New York, Minneapolis) but what about cities where the relationship within the police and the community is less dangerous, less racist and a beacon of how things SHOULD be, despite how they actually are?

I see them all as pretty similar. Because none truely punish cops for misdeeds. It’s all based on the personal feelings of the cops whether someone skates or dies.

While some (NYPD, Chicago) are infamous they all structurally fail to be deciplined in any real way.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs. I guess when it comes to accountability, it's a matter of powers that go beyond just departments. But there's gotta be departments that have better tactics of dealing with civilians, criminal or otherwise, no? Or is that being too optimistic?

At least before now Atlanta had a low rate of police brutality relative to most big cities...probably because half the police force is black.

Boston.

Can anyone here name a police brutality case or shooting of an unarmed black person in Boston over the past 20 years? Not saying they don’t happen I just never heard of any living there. The black community never felt at odds with the BPD not at least since 2000. If anyone has some data or some examples I’d be legit interested.

It’s generally a very low incarceration state and the police just aren’t very aggressive. Maybe it’s because Boston Police Require you live in the city for a period of time before and during being an officer. I’ve never understood it myself.

Do you think it has to do with how the city is perceived? Like post Charles Stuart the BPD and the city really had to fight and reform because the city was basically shamed into doing it by its reputation (which goes far beyond Stuart)

I think part of the issue in NYC and LA is how smug they are that the rest of the country is really racist but not them. Like imagine if Guliani, Bloomberg And Trump had all been from places other than NYC? If they all had been from say Nashville that city would have been branded as very racist. It the LA riots would have forever tarnished any other cities reputation.

I think Atlanta being the primary city on the South has to actually put effort in to outrun its reputation.

Yea, yea I do. I think Boston in general is extra careful not to do anything ehregiously racist or even things that can be perceived that way. It does nothing for the city’s reputation though. People erroneously assume Boston Police must be die hard violent bigots See it in social media all the time. Cities without that racial spotlight can and do get away with more.

Post-Charles Stuart is exactly what I’m thinking. Basically post Mickey Roache. I do know in ~1995 they shot a black teen who stole a car while he was hiding under a car. There might have been a few if those in the 1990s revolving around teens and stolen cars, can’t remember fire sure.

The cities that have less cases of police brutalities would be like Providence RI, New York NY, Boston MA, Hartford CT.
