Hey all! Looking to relocate closer to family in the southeast and purchase a small single family home or townhouse...would love to be close (maybe within an hour?) to a well connected airport, in a decently safe neighborhood, with at least some level of urbanity (whether it be an affordable urban neighborhood in a bigger city, or in-town a smaller town still within an hour or so of a major airport). Schools and job market are not a major concern. My budget is about 300k. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, and of course any questions that might help im happy to answer!

Thanks!

That budget works in almost any southeast city imo.

Atlanta is about the most well-connected city in the SE. At 300k you are on the fringe of getting into one of the established urban neighborhoods...there's not much option but there seem to be a couple of townhomes right around that price in popular neighborhoods like Edgewood and Old Fourth Ward. With townhomes you'll need to be aware of HOAs. If you can stomach a transitioning area like Pittsburgh (southwest of downtown ATL) then that would get you the most bang for your buck. I know it's been a hot gentrifying neighborhood for years now, but I've seen some flippers doing really nice renos there recently.

If you want a bit more breathing room then look into some other cities that I wouldn't know as well. Maybe Orlando or Charlotte. I'll mention Jax since I do know it well. 300k would get you a modest home in the best urban neighborhood: Riverside. Very walkable and decently safe. Jax airport doesn't quite make the mark as "well-connected" in my book, but it's in that middle/gray area so it might be suitable for you. Orlando's airport is just a 2ish hour drive away for way more international options.

Thanks!! Jax, and specifically Riverside are near the top of my list right now from the little research i've done. I'll look into the Pittsburgh area of Atlanta as well (I do love Atlanta).

Great topic. It really depends. If you like/love to travel by air, I would consider living in Atlanta (Delta hub), Miami or Charlotte (American hub). If those things do not matter, disregard.

If you can work remote, that also changes things.

Nashville, TN
Asheville, NC
Tampa, FL
Raleigh, NC
Charlotte, NC
Virginia Beach, VA

All come to mind and have pros/cons. At 300k, you will be fine in any of them

I would highly recommend Asheville. You have pretty decent selections in your price range in neighborhoods like Downtown or West Asheville where you'll have walkability to and from restaurants, bars, grocery stores, shops and other amenities. Asheville's airport is surprisingly useful with non-stop service to NYC-LaGuardia, Newark, DC-National and Dulles, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, Charlotte, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Dallas and Denver. It's right at 2 hours to Charlotte's airport if west coast or international travel is needed.
