We are 69 and 70. Retired. No children - just 2 dogs. I have family on Long Island - husband does not. We will be living on social security and a 401K.
Looking for a modest house - no more than $250,000. Can be in 55 community. We would like a place that we don't have to take of the lawn if possible.
We are trying to choice between Port St Lucie, Florida, Ocala, Florida (maybe Top of the World) or Clayton, NC (we would have close friends there that are moving there)
We currently live on Long Island - Suffolk County but it is not rural.
FWIW, all of the new 55+ communities in the Triangle area sell for top dollar. IMO, they are a rip off. I'm not sure that you'd find one for $250K. On the other hand, $250 will find you a decent home in Clayton area or other places in Johnston County.
I’d pick North Carolina. On one hand, Florida weather is generally beautiful from October to May. But damn, summers in Florida are disgustingly hot. North Carolina is no picnic either but the different seasons are nice. I guess it all depends on what you’re willing to put up with. I just moved to Charlotte and I’m dreading the cold at the end of the year.
If you’re determined to move to Florida, it’s a very nice place. Ignore the above comment, he has no credibility or objectivity when it comes to Florida. As far as your choices, Port St. Lucie is very slow and boring. Ocala is yuck. If you’re gonna move to Florida at your age, I’d recommend Cape Coral or Fort Myers. Very nice places for older people.

I agree. Buy a nice single story, new construction home for well under 250K (200K-220K) in Clayton and spend a couple hundred per month during the growing season on a landscaping service, probably half that from November to March for monthly service.
I prefer eastern Tenn. to Fla. and N.C. Knoxville and Chattanooga are among the best-kept secrets in the entire country. My goodness, that area is beautiful.
After living in Fla. for twelve years, my prediction regarding domestic migration has always been: Fla. —> N.C. / S.C. —> Tenn. —> Ky. Thus far, my prediction has been accurate.

Actually FL ---> GA is higher in transplant numbers than FL ---> NC which I found surprising given the number of FL plates in NC, which might be more about second homes though versus primary.

I agree with this /\ . With what you listed and you already having friends in the Raleigh/Durham area, you should be able to find what you're looking for in Clayton or other areas in Johnston County. NC just has a great balance of QOL categories.
Cary is too. You go right outside the city limit and that 550k home you just looked at is suddenly 330k in Apex or Morrisville.
We are looking (Not me personally), inbetween Greensboro and Raleigh (Including both cities) and find the areas around Durham (Hillsborough NC for example) are very appropriately priced. Just north of Durham has some walkable areas with units as low as 150k. Generally nice areas as well.
