My sister told me that our family drove through New Mexico on our way to Texas when I was a toddler, but even if we did, that doesn't count in my book.
So the closet state I've never been to is New Mexico.
Sacramento to Albuquerque: 1,080 miles (one way)
Sacramento to Santa Fe: 1,142 miles (one way)
We are planning a trip to Southern Utah (Zion, Glen Canyon, and Canyonlands National Parks) this fall, so we just might continue on to Santa Fe. I've always wanted to go there.
Kentucky. We moved to the Knoxville area about 5 years ago and have been to every other neighboring state. We do have plans to go after the Covid mess is over.
Florida. I'm in Triangle NC so it would be about a 6.5 hour drive to get to the state line (Fernandina Beach) from here...
I just looked at a map and saw the only two states on the Atlantic Seaboard that I've never been to are the two extremes, Florida and Maine...
The drive to Florida from the Triangle is easy but BORING. I-95 in SC is particularly painful because it's 200 miles of pretty much nothing to see except for Lake Marion halfway through the state. I have made that trip up or down 95 maybe 60 times.
Whether measuring from FL or NC, the closest one that I've never been to is Louisiana. I've been to all of the states around it, but never to Pelican State itself.
I'm in Alabama, and the closest state I've never been to is Kansas.
It's about a 12 hour drive (765 miles) to the state line and no good direct way to get there.
I'd be happy to visit Kansas one day, but have no plans for it.
