In Kansas City, I was working weekends, and had 5 days off every week. My GF got one of those Nationar Parks passports, and we got it stamped in 48 states in one year, all by car.
I would say Chicago, but for several months out of the year, you´d have to contend with weather issues much more than you would in Dallas or Atlanta.
I'm not sure that's factually accurate. The area around Dallas is quite thunderstorm prone. I've suffered through very many weather issues year round in Dallas. Any time it rains it seems like the system collapses. I've spent far more impromptu overnights in Dallas due to weather than Chicago. A flight attendants on one of my flights there one time said DFW stood for "Doesn't Function Wet".
Personally, I like choices for airlines because more competition means better prices and more options for flights.
Charlotte was US Airways answer to Atlanta. DFW is far more prominent for AA, with comparable market share but far higher passenger numbers.
I definitely agree with you. I come from a TWA and AA family who were estatic US merged with AA. But, in the long run I see how that affected competition.

The actual statistics seem to reflect that.
According to the Bureau of Transportatiom Statistics in 2018, Chicago's airport was affected more by weather delays than any other airport by a significant margin, followed by Atlanta, Newark, *then* Dallas.
Dallas and Atlanta can get intense thunderstorms during their warm season, but they're almost always intermittent compared to Chicago where they have to frequently de-ice planes because of extremely cold temperatures and intense snowstorms that can linger for several hours *ON TOP OF* intense thunderstorms such as the derecho they got earlier this month.

Atlanta has the largest airport by passenger traffic and is the largest hub in the world
Dallas is Atlanta, secondle fiddle.
Charlotte is American Airlines answer to Atlanta.
Chicago is the busiest airport by DOPS
DFW serves more domestic destinations than ATL or any other airport in the US actually. I would call it second fiddle to any airport.
