A google search also shows a lot of tattoo parlors in Salt Lake.

I don't think many cities can top Eugene and Portland, Oregon when it comes to the amount of people with noticeable tattoos.

Less or fewer? Quite a few people have one or two. Those are usually on an area of skin which is covered by business attire.

Probably DC, not only because it's hard to get a government job with one but also just because it feels like a pretty straight-laced, conventional city without a huge counterculture.

Not as a rule, but you will see one occasionally.

Places with more art classes have less tattoos because they are accustomed to using paper for their art?

There is no reason for Mormons to not get tattoos. People of the Jewish faith do not get tattoos for a cultural reason: the Nazis tattooed them with identification numbers which makes them anti-tattoo. So you can look for a city that has a large Jewish population (I don't know where that is, back east, most likely)

Boise actually has a large presence of tattoo parlors and seeing people around town with Ink in this hip outdoorsy city is very common.
15% mormons is fairly sizeable, no?

I think you will find that a strong majority of adults under 40-50 years old in the US have at least one tattoo. As mentioned, having a tattoo is so mainstream that it is considered a rite of passage among younger generations. I know college students, construction workers, IT folks, cowboys/wranglers, school teachers, and evangelical Christians with tattoos.

That said, having one or two tattoos in an inconspicuous place or on a conventional part of the body is different from full sleeves, knuckles, neck, or full back/thigh placements. Tattooing to that extreme definitely seems more popular in parts of the West to me, though it can be found just about everywhere, especially in counterculture contexts like artists, musicians, the culinary scene, etc.

Face tattoos are popular in just about every state among the trashy meth/hard drugs crowd, too.

Hmm.. interesting question. I wonder if any studies have been done on this discussion before.

My guess is twofold. One would be places that the people are more conservative in their appearance and attire. My other guess includes places that have a higher percentage of population that is not of the Millennial age generation. But those are just a guess on my part. States including West Virginia, Arkansas, Kentucky, Kansas, Nebraska, Tennessee, Missouri, Alabama, Mississippi, etc (?). As far as bigger cities, I would guess Nashville, Louisville, Kansas City and maybe Indianapolis (?) but again those are just guesses.

I am of the Millennial Generation, but I don't have tattoos nor do I have any interest in getting any ever. It's just not my scene. However, many people are getting more and more of them - sort of blurring the lines between those that do have some/many and those that don't have any.
