In my experience, the Midwest is the friendliest region of America. As a general rule, people in the Midwest are approachable, considerate, cooperative, pleasant and polite. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, such Cincinnati and St. Louis, for example, where people are generally disaffected and unpleasant. However, cities located west of the 81st meridian west -- which excludes Ashtabula and Youngstown, Ohio, mind you -- are typically friendlier than cities located east of it, and this applies to both the American North and South. In fact, I have asserted for quite some time that the 81st meridian is the most prominent dividing line in the nation as it relates to American culture.

I've gotta go with the midwest. "Southern Hospitality" is superficial. They'll be all saccharine to your face, but the second your back is turned there's a good chance they're talking crap about you.

No. This oft repeated claim on C-D is ridiculous. There are people like you describe everywhere, it certainly isn't common in my experience at all here. The South hardly owns this behavior.

The South isn't monolithic, no region is. Again, this is not common in the Metropolitan South. You've been raving about Greensboro lately, are you agreeing with him that you have experienced this false narrative there?

You're literally describing Midwest Nice - "not so much about being 'nice' but more about keeping up appearances, maintaining the social order, and keeping people (including non-natives of the state) in their place."
