My folks grew up in Oakland, my grandparents lived there, visited Oakland a LOT growing up and since - never heard of Ghost Town. Must be a new name for an old area?
Uh oh! Another list that’s going to cause lots of debates. This list was created by Time Out and based on the opinions of locals, 38,000 plus city dwellers who took part in Time out’s survey plus a round up of Time Out editors and experts.
7 American cities made the list. Keep in mind this their coolest list of neighborhoods in 2020. Not coolest of all-time but just of 2020.
Modcut: North America only
An American neighborhood is the 2nd coolest. And that neighborhood is....
2. Downtown Los Angeles
Other American neighborhoods and their rankings.
4. Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn
15. Ghost Town,Oakland
24. Uptown, Chicago
25. Little 5 points, Atlanta
26. Wynwood, Miami
37. Allston, Boston
I was just in Uptown for Ethiopian food( not Demeras but I went to a place called Tesfa) earlier this week. It's one of the only neighborhoods in Chicago where you can find Northern East African food. Next to them there are some other African shops, including a food market. It's sort of like a Little Africa on Wilson ave. I will say the culture diversity and as a result the number of cuisines is a strong pull to the neighborhood. A cool neighborhood for sure. As the article said, cool is subjective and Uptown is really one of several of its kind in proximity that are melting pots. I think timeout nominates a different neighborhood for the top 40-50 list each year. Last year, Pilsen( hip predominately Mexican community on the west/southwest side) was in the top 10 of coolest in the world.
Without reading anything, let me guess....they come out with a different top 40 every year, with a completely different list of neighborhoods.
