*New Jersey
*Connecticut
*Delaware
*Virginia

They're all just gigantic bedroom communities for DC/PHL/NYC/BOS.

Also, I would say:

*South Carolina
*Mississippi
*Iowa
*Kansas
*South Dakota
*West Virginia
*Montana
*New Hampshire
*Vermont
*Maine

As far as states only known for their cities, Illinois (Chicago) is the only one I can think of.

Can you name a 3rd and 4th city in ANY state besides California or Texas? Or are you stumped after Omaha or Birmingham plus their capitals? Quid, name four cities in Kentucky.

Yeah. Kentucky is a tough one. Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort and then I draw a blank.

But I think naming four cities in New York would be easy for most people: New York, Buffalo, Syracuse, West Point. Almost everyone would know those four.

Your comment got me thinking about an amazing thing about Kentucky.

Largest city is Louisville at 600K+
Second largest is Lexington at 300K+

Then Third is Bowling Green at 70K.

That's amazing that you go from over 300K to 70K. In fact Owensboro is the only other city in the state that is over 50K.

Only four cities in Kentucky that are over 50K in population.

I think Colorado deals with the same thing. People generally think of Colorado as either Denver or mountains and skiing where in fact half of the state is essentially Kansas.

As an outsider, I think NY has a thing going for it. To me it's New York or Upstate.

At least that differentiates it. To me when someone says they're from New York, in my mind that is NYC.

When they say Upstate, it's everything else

The first 3, yes. West Point, ehhh not so sure about. Now if you replace WP with Niagara Falls then I think it's a no brainer.

I would replace West Point with Rochester or Albany.

NJ though, off the top of my head I can name Newark, Edison, Hackensack, Morristown, Jersey City, Fort Lee, Palisades Park, Trenton, Orange, Cherry Hill, Camden, Paramus, Montclair etc. and I've only been to Jersey once in my whole life.

Easy. Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville, Montgomery, and the various suburbs that go along...

I think I could name 3 or 4 cities in more than half the states.
