How many rando Americans would be able to name any cities in Minnesota? Minneapolis or St. Paul is not on anyone's radar outside of the Upper Midwest. It doesn't help that all six of our professional sports teams go by the "Minnesota" label:
Minnesota Timberwolves
Minnesota Wild
Minnesota Twins
Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota United FC
Minnesota Lynx
Didn't there used to be a major cable tv station based in Secaucus? Maybe back in the 1980s?
That, I don't know. But even though Secaucus is in New Jersey, I would think that a station based there would be considered serving the New York broadcast market. You know, kind of how the New York Giants play at the Meadowlands, which is also in Secaucus.
I think Colorado deals with the same thing. People generally think of Colorado as either Denver or mountains and skiing where in fact half of the state is essentially Kansas.
As an outsider, I think NY has a thing going for it. To me it's New York or Upstate.
At least that differentiates it. To me when someone says they're from New York, in my mind that is NYC.
When they say Upstate, it's everything else
I would think that people outside of NY probably know about Long Island and Niagara Falls too. I think because the City and the state have the same name is why people automatically think of just NYC by default. If we called the state by a different name I don’t think it would happen as much.
A state known for it's cites would be and less for the state would be Massachusetts (Most Americans only know Mass for Boston) Nevada (Vegas and Reno) Illnois (people legit think Chicago is a state) and Lousiana (New Orelans pretty much overshadows the rest of the state)
A state that's known more for the state and less of it's cities is New Jersey, Connecticut, Minnestoa, Kansas, West Virgina, and Idaho.
States known for the cites and state is California, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio.

True but part of that is because of the twin city thing. That’s why you saw TC on the twins hat

WOR channel 9 is "superstation" modeled after WTBS, that is broadcast from Seacaucus, NJ, which is at the NJ end of the Lincoln Tunnel. They had a weatherman, Lloyd Lindsay Young, that was well known for a bit.
Virginia, we dont have well known cities but the state is well known knotty because of US history.
Richmond and VA beach are pretty known. Lynchburg is where Liberty University is.
