We're currently living in Seattle and due to covid-19 my company now allows me to work remotely so we've been considering moving to a NY suburb because it's closer to family.
* We'd like to be close enough to the City but won't be commuting in rush hour, mostly to go over the weekends. (~ 1 hour is ok)
* Schools is an important factor given we have 2 babies.
* LI seems (or Huntington) seems a bit more expensive in property taxes but maybe you could get better schools so there's a balance.
* I've checked as well some suburbs in NJ but from what I've seen I end up liking more Stamford or some places in LI nearby Huntington.
Westchester seems nice as well but the towns seem smaller (you have to go somewhere else for entertainment) and properties seem more expensive.

New Rochelle has quite a bit of entertainment, as do the Rivertowns in western Westchester County. With the latter, that includes places like Croton-on-Hudson, Hastings-On-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow, Ossining, Peekskill, Briarcliff Manor and the Hendrick Hudson SD. nyack across the Hudson River in Rockland county does as well.
Check out Great Neck NY which has very highly ranked schools and is on the north shore of LI closer in to NYC than Huntington. Great Neck has it's own LIRR station as well for easy NYC commutes/family outings.

Are you looking for a bigger suburb with walkability near NYC? What about budget? Anything else?
Thanks for all the info! Our budget to buy a house is ~1m, our household income is 250k. Regarding walkability, we're in the fence, we do like to be close to suburb Downtown area with some amenities as I don't think we'd go much to NYC during the week.

So, that may be something to consider. Scarsdale also touches New Rochelle's North Side, which is similarly affluent and Mamaroneck/Larchmont, both of which also have walkable Downtowns.
What do you think about Long Island vs Westchester county?, most of the recommendation are in Westchester so I'm wondering, is LI not good?, I know traffic is terrible in rush hour but that wouldn't be an issue. Any other reason to avoid LI ?
