Another thing about Montclair is that it is multi nodal. So while it has it Downtown: https://www.google.com/maps/@40.8137...7i16384!8i8192

It also has a business district on Walnut Street near the rail station: https://www.google.com/maps/@40.8169...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

On the South End on Orange Road(a mix with quite a few black owned businesses): https://www.google.com/maps/@40.7971...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

and on Bloomfield around the Bay Street station(also a mix that has its share of black owned businesses): https://www.google.com/maps/@40.8090...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

So, I'm wondering if that is another aspect that the OP is looking for?

As mentioned with Greenburgh, you have villages/communities with their own Downtowns/business districts like Tarrytown: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.0763...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

Irvington: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.0392...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

Dobbs Ferry: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.0145...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

Hastings-on-Hudson: https://www.google.com/maps/@40.9943...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

^All are a part of the Rivertowns, which has become somewhat popular with people leaving Brooklyn and still want somewhat of an artsy scene.

Ardsley: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.0120...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

Elmsford(has a substantial black middle class that makes up about 27% of the village and is the most diverse of the villages. For the NBA followers, Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz is from there): https://www.google.com/maps/@41.0544...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

Greenville/Edgemont: https://www.google.com/maps/@40.9968...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

Hartsdale: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.0188...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

Even Fairview to some degree(a working/lower middle class predominantly black CDP): https://www.google.com/maps/@41.0414...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

As for a neighborhood/area, this is the previously mentioned Parkway Homes/Parkway Gardens area near the North White Plains station(a long time predominantly black, middle class area of the town): https://www.google.com/maps/@41.0579...2!9m2!1b1!2i37 (Parkway Homes section)

https://www.google.com/maps/@41.0545...7i16384!8i8192 (Parkway Gardens section)

So, while bigger, it seems to be quite similar in many respects.

Yeah and Mitchell's childhood friend/teammate, Warriors All-rookie forward Eric Paschall, is from Dobbs Ferry.

Chevy Chase is one of the richest suburbs in Maryland. However, it is 92% white and only 1% black.

The demographic makeup in the DC suburbs change dramatically from one area to another

The median black household income in Milton was $94,900 in 2016. By now it is surely well over $100,000. extremely similar.

Also looks-wise Montlair and Milton are similar. One slight difference: Milton prefers a more rustic uncurbed sidewalk-median as does much of upscale Massachusetts. Montclair prefers the more manicured streetscape upscale NE NJ prefers. Streets are straighter in New Jersey which give you a more unbroken sightline of the beautiful homes (this also works to NJ's disadvantage in places like Irvington and Newark)

Very similar towns

This is what Milton lacks.

In large part because adjacent towns have them and entertainment complexes in spades... Theres no room for Milton retail.

juuust over the border in Dorchester: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.2722...7i16384!8i8192

10 minutes form Milton in Braintree: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.2179.../data=!3m1!1e3
These photos of Milton definitely resemble Montclair.

Good to see a positive thread about a NJ town with a large black population.

I have nothing to add since I'm only familiar with other NJ towns but I'm happy to read an engaging thread about positive aspects of a New Jersey town. Thanks for starting it and contributing to it. It's interesting to see similarities between other areas but also interesting to know that towns like this are a bit unique. Most people (who haven't been here) have a negative perception of our state but with almost 600 municipalities crammed into the third smallest state in the nation, there's a lot to learn about and a lot to love.

Most of the more influential black politicians/business people in Eastern MA in Milton (Deval Patrick, Greg Shell also of Bain Capital), Hyde Park (Ayanna Presley, State Rep. Russell Holmes), Cambridge (Henry Gates) or Brookline/Newton(former gubernatorial candidate and Mayor of Newton-Setti Warren, the Cohee family- owners of OneUnited Bank).

My Church relocated from the South End of Boston for massive financial gain and moved to Milton to be closer to the majority of the congregation. Lot of upscale black events thrown at the Milton Society for Women’s headquarters. Additionally Milton Academy is a prestigious schools with some notable black alumni( Jidenna, Bertha Coombs[she also attended private school in Brookline as did I], Deval Patrick and Touré)and an diverse student body.

Milton used to have 23% black schools ~2010 as people from Hyde Park Mattapan and Dorchester were using their family’s addresses in Milton to access better or (closer public schools) Milton explicitly became much more strict in attendance zones and street policing in general. In my many visits to Maplewood NJ I hear similar issues in that town. That it’s progressive-but only to a very clear and defined point. Idk about Montclair though.

Montclair is a better version of Milton IMO.

Good to know. There are definitely a lot of folks using family member's address to get into other school districts.

Newark's suburbs (Montclair, South Orange, West Orange, Union, Maplewood etc.) are the best areas for blacks in NJ (IMO) but unfortunately places like Montclair, Maplewood, and South Orange have seen declines in the black population. IDK if this trend will hold up as the black population is increasing in other Newark suburbs like Union, Hillside, etc.

What's interesting is at one point South Orange's blacks had a higher median income than whites but that has changed. https://villagegreennj.com/community...ter-wealthier/
I assume trends are similar in Montclair as I know that lower/middle income blacks are moving out of Montclair.

Another great thing about Montclair is it has multiple train stations, which is rare for a NJ town.
