Been to Dallas many times. It's pretty common to hear that said in Dallas and often. Maybe you should listen more.
Or maybe you're just exaggerating...or lying. Lived in Texas for most of my life and I ain't never heard that expression, and I'm not the only Texan who says so.

Apparently, you are the end all for knowing what all Texans say at all times. Likely because you spent so much time in the LA of Texas.
Houston by far is very underrated. Houston is a great place it has: a huge downtown, great architechture, and a great way to live with cheap housing and great food. Houston is the place.
On this list, I'd say Milwaukee. A really friendly, livable and architecturally interesting city. Strange that you don't hear more about it.
I agree that Milwaukee is underrated. It has its pockets of areas (as does every large city) that you avoid, but overall Milwaukee is a very livable city. The Lake Michigan shoreline is beautiful, as is a lot of the architecture in the city. Milwaukee has blue collar work ethic, but is no longer a blue collar city.
Milwaukee's East side is very cosmopolitan, and there's always something going on in Milwaukee. It's festivals (starting off with Summerfest) are a huge draw.
Toss in the Hartford metro and I'll vote. If you put Hartford, it's suburbs, downtown and mega corporate presence in MS or KS it would be a major metro by all standards.
But being between Boston and NYC it's in a bit of a shadow, and frankly that's fine with me. We get the best of both worlds.
Do you think the reason why Fort Worth is so huge is because of Dallas? I wonder if Forth Worth is huge in the same way Newark is huge. Perhaps Fort Worth benefits from being near Dallas.
BTW, I agree about Hartford. It is a nice city from what I hear.
I also agree about Hartford. That's a beautiful area in my opinion, and gets very little recognition. Honestly if I were forced to relocate to the New England area I'd go for Connecticut first.

Why oh why oh why oh why do some Texans feel that they have to be, be like, or be compared to California???
No contest...and they're just different.
