Check out the suburbs of Rochester NY. All are beautiful quaint towns with lots of little shops and many beautiful homes. Add to that the fact that most are on Lake Ontario, the Erie Canal, the Finger Lakes or the Genesee River and that adds to their ambiance and beauty. The only ones that are kind of commercial with strip malls are Henrietta and Greece. They also all have near zero crime. Man I am getting homesick!

People forgot Detroit.

Yes Detroit. The city may not be that great, as well as its south suburbs, but its north suburbs: Oakland County particularly and a few others in the other counties are really nice.
