Are there any areas of the U.S. that truly look and feel industrial (steel mills, manufacturing, etc.) akin to the old days before companies began moving to the Sunbelt or overseas? You often hear that cities along the lines of Cleveland aren't as gritty as they used to be, but are there any areas that still feel gritty and industrial in this day and age?
Large parts of Detroit proper look like this, mainly the lower east side and SW side.
The far southern portion of Warren, MI (a Detroit suburb) along 9/10 mile roads, Hoover Road, Mound Road, Sherwood Drive and Groesbeck Highway also have a post WWII industrial look, because that's where all of the tool & die shops were set up.
East Side of Houston from the ship channel on. Plenty of other areas along the Gulf Coast in Lousiana and Texas with all the heavy petrochemical plants/ports. Specifically, parts of Corpus, as well as Freeport, Texas City, and Beaumont/Port Arthur in Texas. In Louisiana there is Lake Charles and Baton Rouge.
The other big areas I can think of have been mentioned- River Rouge area in Detroit/Dearborn, East Chicago/Gary, and Northern New Jersey near Newark.

East LA is also pretty industrial. Guess the industry goes East.
