I've lived in Austin for 6 years and I'm ready to go somewhere else, even if just for a short time (6 mos or so). My current lease is up in August and I'm looking for a new place to go. I'm working at Starbucks until I finish college, so my job is transferable. And my college is online so that's no concern. I currently live with a roommate and with rent and bills and everything I probably spend about $1300 a month. I have my own car also. I know I probably can't afford to live in a big city as much as I'd like too, but if I could live within an hour's drive that would be great. I'd like somewhere with all 4 seasons, and preferably coastal. I've learned i really love to be near the ocean. I've been researching Vermont lately, I've lived in snow before but I don't know if I can deal with *that much snow*. Oh I'm also transgender, so a liberal LGBTQ friendly place would be very important.
Providence? Close to Boston (70 minutes) and New York (200 minutes) with lots of amenities nearby (Cape Cod, Newport). You can easily live in providence with a roommate for about 800 a month with utilities. The minimum wage will be $12.50 when you go. My cousin went to Brown and worked at a Starbucks for $15 an hour in downtown Providence.
Very different climate than Austin and is something new. Providence also has the best LGBT scene in New England. The weather is great, its diverse and the food is good too... a lot less snowy than VT too lol
You'll hear this a lot but for good reason...Philly and Chicago if you want affordable big city living. I think you'd be able to afford an ok living with roommates in Chicago. And the Lake is almost like being near the ocean.

Oh I did look at Chicago but I figured it was way to expensive. I would definitely look at Philly too.

I always imagine Rhode Island as a place overrun with white people lololol. Is it more diverse than that? $12.50 as min wage sounds great. That's more than I make now.

I mean Providence is close to 30% Non Hispanic White. 42% Hispanic. 17% Black. 8% Asian. Not exactly overrun with white people. Rhode Island is a lot more diverse than you'd think. Providence is far more diverse than Austin.
Providence area has the largest Cape Verdean, Liberian and Portuguese populations in America. Also the 2nd highest concentration of Cambodians.

You could look at New York City. Right now, rents are down 20-30% in many areas (some even more!), due to COVID-19. It's an incredible time to look for an apartment in NYC now.
If not NYC, try Philly, Providence or Baltimore.
But I'd encourage you to check out NYC. Brooklyn has some huge bargains right now--in incredible neighborhoods.

If Providence isnt your cup of tea, Il piggy back off this. NYC has some cheaper neighborhoods now and the pay there is high.
Also, Jersey City is pretty cheap right now too.
