I think because of it's dense population, the tri-state is the most accessible metro-area in the nation, and possibly the world.

The NYC metro area definitely has the most used commuter rail in the US by far, but it's not even close to the most used commuter rail in the world.
Seoul beats out New York by a little. Tokyo beats out New York by
twice as much passengers per year.
Moscow's ridership is around
3 times as much as New York. Imagine all the people who use the New York transit system yearly, now imagine 3 times that.
I do think New York has the most track mileage? I don't remember.
