hoping for sound advice on better vacation option for a family of 5, children 15, 14, and 11. Love the idea of both. will do some mild/midlevel hiking. have been to all places myself, but children have not. Unfortunately, news media on the east coast paints SF in horrid light and it's been a while since I've been back. We do have some (distant) family in SF area, but not necessarily a huge factor.
Love the epic quality of both options ... Many thanks in advance.
When do you plan on doing this? Are you wanting to stay inside Yosemite, if that is the choice, because many sites are booked out a year in advance. However, I've had good luck booking Housekeeping camp a few months out.
I'd personally do the Grand Canyon and Sedona but I'm from Texas so the heat doesn't bother me. "It's a dry heat" anyway, right?
I just revisited the Grand Canyon and Sedona and Monument Valley and all that and I am so glad I did so. It all made me proud to be an American. I visited in early September and it was fine for the record.
Do Grand Canyon, Vegas, Sedona in July. Grand Canyon is pretty high elevation and not that hot. Vegas would be hot, but it is a different world from the National Parks and the heat doesn't matter. Don't forget your close to southern Utah and that is worth visiting.
I would do the Yosemite, SF, PCH, trip during spring break. Spring is glorious in California and in Yosemite the falls are running. Not as impressive by July. The only advantage to July in Yosemite is the high country. That is worth hiking and visiting.
The ONE place that impressed my young daughter, was the thermal area in the southwest corner of Yellowstone National Park. The rest of the National Parks and Forests didn't impress her.

July...I would do Yosemite / SF....desert heat (dry or whatever you want to call it) and I don’t mix. You don’t have to stay in the City of SF—Marin is just across the Golden Gate and has great hiking trails, Mt Tamalpais, Muir Woods, Stinson Beach.
I wouldn't take children to San Francisco..... Yosemite would be nice, as would all, though. And, staying in Marin County is a nice option.
