Texas seems like it's almost completely back to normal, at least from what I've seen in Dallas. Nobody was wearing a mask at any of the bars I went to, it was refreshing.
I'm cautiously planning a road trip back east in September. We (New Mexico) are doing pretty well with COVID and the vaccine distribution -- have been leading the country in that respect. Masks are still common in grocery stores. I carry one in my pocket and put it on if the business people are masked. My local brewpub no longer requires masks. The Indian Pueblos remain closed to visitors. Museums are open with advance tickets (online). We are at full capacity for NM United soccer games (9,000+) and Isotopes baseball. All counties are at the lowest COVID rate. Our monsoon season is late July and August so we are hoping for rain...it has been very dry. June is our hottest month. Temperature today is 102 in Albuquerque but humidity is 6% (91 in Santa Fe). By fall things should be even better for visitors. The Balloon Fiesta is on for early October, which is a nice time to visit. The Aspens turn about then.
IDK why anyone would recommend DFW as a vacation spot? Sure, it has a zoo and some cool museums and what not, but that's not unusual for most cities that size. It's otherwise kind of blah... it's not pretty, its' not near any really noteworthy outdoor destinations or interesting outdoor topography. Like, what are u gonna do in Dallas that you can't do in most large cities across the US? The whole point of a vay-cay is too do something that isn't part of your routine. To go see something different, experience something different, be inspired by the beauty of something, revel in the gloriousness of a new destination that is outside of your norm.
I remember pre-COVID, I attended a work event in Dallas as part of a three day thing we were doing and I remember one night they piled us all on a chartered bus to tour around the city and one of the destinations they took us was on to a freeway to show us the "high 5" stack interchange..... Like we sat in traffic to look at a freeway interchange and that was one of the notable things about Dallas that was on our agenda.... That's when I knew.... DFW was truly an exotic experience not to be missed.
