I am in the process of making a decision to move. In my twenties and have lived in Long Island (the suburban muse) but I am looking for change, its $$ here- jobs and social life esp.for young people are lacking. I want to find a new place that has good job opportunities in (marketing or real estate) growing economy, friendly and young community where it is easy to meet people, laid back vibe, clean, access to recreation, walkable, but can have a car and somewhat affordable housing so I can buy a place of my own. (No concrete jungles!) In addition I am looking to stay within the northeast/mid-atlantic for the most part. I know its impossible to find a perfect place, but I have done some homework and came up with a few- Providence, Washington DC area and Philadelphia, Boston looks cool. I am looking for input, suggestions or experience living in any of the places to help narrow them down. I added a poll too. Thanks for all your help.
None of the above mentioned cities have a "laid-back vibe". If you have to pick one, though, Providence will likely be the closest.
The Pacific Northwest sounds like a good fit, if you have the flexibility to move there. Cities like Portland and Seattle seem almost perfect for your criteria.
I read a lot of good things about Portland, it looks nice. But its far, it might challenging to get there and back to Ny, esp. around holidays. I though the Wash dc area was nice when I visited last year for a job interview. Except for the downtown core, I thought it felt laid back compared to NYC. I'm guessing Providence would be somewhat similar to a Portland?
Pittsburgh might be a good choice. Not sure about the job opportunities in Marketing and Real Estate but aside from that issue I believe it has most of what you are looking for in a city.
Thanks for the feedback, I used that find your place website and I did get about 20 results, I thought it was somewhat accurate- so I read through them and picked a few that I mentioned in my original post. In terms of real estate, it will always be in demand! Its not just sales, I am looking for marketing jobs, foreclosure, commercial property management opportunities. I could also do rehabs. I am trying put some focus into places that also contain a diverse regional economy, not a one horse town. This way if I decide to change my career there would be other opportunities available. Where I am now is a far commute from NYC and it is very limiting economy and social life wise. The find the spot quiz seems to come up with places that are near the coasts though.
Laid back vibe in those cities? Sounds like you need other choices besides the ones you chose.
