Don’t get Alabama at all. I was born there and lived there until I finished college. IMO, the ONLY part I would even consider living in again is north AL around Huntsville, and that’s even a stretch. Quality of life in most parts of Alabama is not very good.

Heavily disagree, Quality of Life is pretty good in the major metros/cities: Huntsville, Mobile, Birmingham Auburn, and Tuscaloosa. It’s the rural areas that are pretty awful, but to say the entire state is, is pretty dishonest

I see you live in Mobile. Grew up there and still have friends there. Evacuated from many hurricanes through the years. If you think the QOL is good there, I simply don’t know how to respond. Have you done much traveling to other places in the U.S.?

Everything is relative. We’ve lived in or very near most Gulf Coast states. If quality of living is a major criteria, there are so many other states that come out ahead. I’ll give you seafood can’t be beat though. Just my opinion, of course.

Speaking of relative, this is not comparing Alabama to Ohio or Massachusetts or something. This is comparing it to Mississippi and West Virginia, etc.

That said, I'm surprised Arkansas is faring so poorly here.

New Mexico I get because it's the most different, with the others overlapping each other in a few ways. Desert life is attractive for some.

Yeah, that's what people on C-D keep saying, but Northwest Arkansas just keeps doing better than Huntsville. Wal-Mart evolves too, and there is more to NWA than Wal-Mart. Because Wal-Mart, which is a behemoth, gets so much attention, people don't realize that NWA's economy is more diverse than that. C-D'ers keep underestimating NWA. People on here might be surprised to know that Huntsville historically was always the larger area. NWA only passed Huntsville in the 2000-2010 decade, and continues to grow at a faster pace.

I can sort of see why Arkansas is not faring too well. I think the overall reputation of Arkansas nationwide, is one that ain't so great, so-to-speak.

Northwest Arkansas is a fairly more developed region of Arkansas and it is doing pretty well to break out of the stereotypical mold of "old Arkansas".

Little Rock is another bright spot in Arkansas and offers a surprising lot for folks who aren't too familiar.

Outside of these 2 areas, Arkansas offers very little economic, development and large regions of progressive culture, thus its reputation as a state that is not too desirable overall, unfortunately.

As for New Mexico, I agree. The openness and gorgeous high desert geography helps the perception. It is considered a "cool state" by a lot of people.

Also, Santa Fe is just a super desirable gem of a city, and the ski area of Taos is another amenity the state offers.
