Maine might be nice. I was focusing on milder winters before but now I just don't care. Milders winters normally means more humid hot summers so there is a trade off.

Bellingham is not the answer: https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...ily-home/sby-1

Also, it is approaching 100,000 population and is becoming more expensive as the wealthy move in. The homeless population is getting out of control as Bellingham wants to emulate its woke southern neighbor Seattle.

About the only places I would suggest in Washington would be on the Olympic Peninsula or in northern Washington (Republic).

I understand why the OP wants to move, though. My hometown is gentrifying quickly and soon we won’t be able to stand the traffic, crowds, expenses.

It's the whole west coast I would of suggested the OP (but the COL are Seattle/western WA prices now) the only place I would live if we stayed. Where are you from?

Maybe around Christiansburg VA. Or Staunton or Harrisonburg VA.

Or Albany / Lebanon OR. Or maybe Pendleton, La Grande or Baker City OR. Or Lewiston ID or the outskirts of Twin Falls ID area. Possibly Walla Walla WA.

Jamestown NY - city of about 30,000 people adjacent to Allegany State Park and Allegheny National Forest. Real estate is super cheap, no transplants of millionaires moving here. Next biggest cities are Erie PA on Lake Erie at 50 miles, Buffalo at 80 miles. At the front door to Appalachia.

I'd would recommend my area, but real estate is expensive.

You cannot buy a single-family home for $300,000 here.

Oklahoma has really affordable properties and there is forest in some areas...

Your nuts to leave Montana.

Yeah, lots of nut cases moving into the state. They will leave just as quick come winter.

You have a functioning state government....unlike California, Oregon, or Washington.

You have people that are independent and NOT dependent on government.

Montana IS what America was....yeah, I know that was the Idaho tourist slogan for years, but Idaho is toast.

You need border control on the type of people that you allow into Montana.

Grand Rapids, Duluth, or Bemidji Minnesota in that order. Beautiful forested area and very inexpensive (esp. GR and Bemidji.) Winters are very cold, but didn't bother me a bit. The only disadvantage to the area is that it's pretty far from the rest of the world. Just bop on over from MT and see what you think!

Looking above, Eastern Oklahoma might suit you fine - very beautiful forests, very inexpensive, and not a lot of people. Tahlequa or Sallisaw. I found it physically beautiful but sociologically odd; but then, I don't like the baptist religion.

Ya, I don't want people pushing their church on me. That makes the south tough. I like solitude.
