I am sick of Montana. Everyone from California keeps flocking here. Houses are jumping to sky high prices. Our drug, alcoholism, theft, and abuse is growing rapidly. I am ready for a small city close to lots of forest recreation. Considering New Hampshire but open to other areas. I want low crime in a clean quiet area. I'd spwnd up to $300k if need be and like places with large lots. Would prefer at least a 1 acre yard.
For the midwest:
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
North woods of Wisconsin.
Marquette.
Rhinelander.
Wausau.
There are a lot of nice places on some acreage in the general region.
If open to NY, Plattsburgh, Gloversville/Johnstown, Rome, Glens Falls and Saratoga Springs puts you close to the Adirondack Mountains. You should be able to find properties that fit your criteria around each of these cities, if not for less in some cases.
New Hamsphire and Vermont are nice but the property taxes scare me. It would be nice to be 3% or less on property taxes. I love being nature but hate venompus snakes so thats why I kind if like more northern areas.

Where I live in Vermont (just outside of Burlington) the base rate is 2.1%, but it drops if your property is eligible for a "homestead declaration" - basically that it's your primary residence. New Hampshire is the one with bad property taxes.

I get what you’re saying about property taxes. It’s hard to buy a place in NH/NY/VT/CT/etc and pay 4K in taxes per year when the same house would only cost 1,200 in South Carolina.

I love the PNW (born & raised) but we are looking for the same and want to get away from crowds. B-Ham in our area if you look outside of the surrounding areas. We are considering the NE States too. Maine? I also do not want to be landlocked. Do you feel that way in MT? (I have read some of your other posts) I would look into NC.
