Hi, so we moved from central Connecticut to Charlotte. Left Charlotte moved to Greensboro area.
It's not too bad of an area. Traffic is nothing like in Charlotte. Can live close to work. It is sunny. The weather for the most part is great. Winters are short and mild. Fall is the best! Fritos and veggies are delicious. Schooling for us more options and more affordable.
Rents and housing here is no different than in Connecticut for the most part. Wages are similiar for the most part. Certain careers looking at pay has a dramatic job down here in NC.
Our only cons are there is a lot of strong Religious undertones and makes the SO uncomfortable. Sex trafficking is a big issue in the South and concerns for our daughter. Drug use seems less noticeable with adults and more prevelant with teens. Working with adolescents bullying seems to have a large presence here.
We do miss the ocean and the sound. Miss the small new England towns that were close knit. Where community came together was a large family. For the most part land of towns is very expansive down South.
Also, another plus the South seems to have stand alone cities with towns/suburbs that are connected to the city. Where up North towns had very little connection to cities so limited activities can do and enjoy.
We have some time to explore till school is finished up for us. Is there any small towns in the South recommend checking out?
Not sure what other criteria you are looking outside of small town and coastal, but,
You can try Fairhope Al. Its a small city that hugs the walls of the Mobile Bay, A suburb of Mobile, Historic city and minutes away from the actual beach. It's considered among the best small cities/towns in the entire country. You can also check out Bellfontaine directly on the other side of Mobile Bay and also hugs the walls of the bay. Its a CDP rather than an actual town, very quiet area South of Mobile.

If you haven’t been to Gatlinburg, TN, go. Also you will love the German look and feel of Helen, GA (https://www.helenga.org/?utm_campaig...1ee46b3422797f). It is a very unique little city in the N GA mountains.
