Houston (friends there), although the state of Texas is a political nightmare from my point of view
Burlington, which I found an interesting city despite having no interest whatsoever in the rest of Vermont
St. Louis has some lovely neighborhoods, though like Texas, Missouri state politics are abysmal to my way of thinking
Parts of Placer and Fresno Counties in California can get really good for a rather low cost, but I don’t like California as a whole. Taxes and costs are too high.
Laie, Hawaii has pretty good employment, without the nasty commutes to Honolulu. Hawaii is pretty similar to California, in that I’d have a hard time living there.
Rural California is especially nice and actually not a complete culture shock coming from the South, but they're still subject to the liberal state government including high taxes, gun grabbing, business overregulation etc.
I would live in far southern Ohio, climactically and culturally as close to the South as you can get. Once you get to Columbus it becomes too cold and snowy.
