Borrowing the theme from a recent thread asking about states you couldn’t live in, in spite of positives I figured the next logical thread might be to list cities you could live in, in spite of the state.
I will start with Miami. Likely the only city I could live in Florida because it is not like the rest of the state culturally and is the most urban (though I do welcome the no state income tax)…any other cities out there meeting this criteria and why?
San Diego.
This one barely sneaks in there.
It still has enough redeeming qualities to offset the fact that it’s in California. Disturbingly overpriced though.
Kansas City, Missouri.
I might could live in some other part of Missouri. I’ve done it before. KC is the only part that I could get enthused about. The Kansas aspect of KC rarely crosses my mind but would be a similar situation. The JoCo suburbs would be it if I had to live in Kansas.
Memphis.
It’s kinda like its own state anyway.
Little Rock.
It can be pretty hokey, but the only part of Arkansas I could stomach if I absolutely had to.
There aren’t any others I can think of. For me it’s easier to list cities to avoid or just the entire states altogether. I’m a city person with traditional, rural sensibilities so the ones I mentioned generally have little to do with politics. Well, except that first one.
Even though I don’t think I could live elsewhere in Utah, I probably could do Salt Lake City itself. I might also consider Reno, though not elsewhere in Nevada. Charleston, but not elsewhere in South Carolina.
Parts of Placer and Fresno Counties in California can get really good for a rather low cost, but I don’t like California as a whole. Taxes and costs are too high.
Laie, Hawaii has pretty good employment, without the nasty commutes to Honolulu. Hawaii is pretty similar to California, in that I’d have a hard time living there.
I can't see myself living anywhere rural, so every city is kinda like this to me, but these are a few I especially like in states that aren't my favorite:
Houston / Dallas, TX
St. Louis / Kansas City, MO
Charleston / Huntington, WV
Omaha, NE
Coeur d'Alene, ID
Birmingham, AL
Manchester, NH
