These U.S. News and World Report National University Rankings are overrated IMO.
I'm not sure what the current methodology is, but as of a couple of years ago, some methodology was based upon:
10% of the methodology is based upon selectivity of admissions. If universities aggressively increase the size of their admissions pool which subsequently results in turning away more students, it shows them to be more "selective".
20% is based upon peer evaluations which is basically a popularity contest or the institution's previously held reputation.
7% is based upon faculty salaries weighted heavily towards research institutions that pay higher salaries for researchers who do very little or no actual teaching in a classroom.
5% is based upon alumni donations.
7.75% is based upon the overuse of standardized testing for admission.
