how could jersey rank 50? with all those TV shows about us and our governor who is on the news every other night. how are we the state people hear about LEAST? doesn't make any sense.

Ironically, I believe that is the general dislike of/for NJ reflecting in whoever made this list. Ironic because the fact that it is like universally disliked makes it known.

I am not sure why New Jersey is last. This is a very old thread and the link is broken.
So just guessing but unfortunately this list might have New Jersey as the last state not so much because NJ is not known but because the New Jersey "brand" is seen negatively around the world. Stereotypes in other words.

Yes, this is an old list. I was reluctant to reply because I believe this list was made even before Jersey Shore aired, which gave us international exposure (albeit pretty negative and totally false from our POV seeing as most in that show were not even from NJ). But as others said earlier on in the thread, I doubt people in other countries would name Montana, Nebraska, or Iowa before they name New Jersey so
Whatever. It doesn't bother me, I'm used to this type of thing, but it is puzzling to me and I suspect bias in the original intent of the list.
I also don't understand the lack of recognition for New Jersey. I mean it is the capital of New York CIty for crissakes! You know, the biggest state in north Florida!
Damn, I knew Illinois wasn't as known as Chicago, but 40th? Jesus, we have to market ourselves better.
This list was more then a decade ago. Might be different today? But Midwest states I expect to rank lower then the coast. Ohio ranked higher. But has more larger cities in it then other Midwest states. NJ has no larger main city. So it probably hurts its ranking.
Chicago probably increased a bit in recognition this decade as tourism skyrocketed. TV shows filmed there and city's name in the title. If seen yet overseas? But really they do not associate it with the state it's in, in reality ... I'd say.

Resurecting a really old thread... But, yes, most people internationally do not know what Illinois is, but they certainly know Chicago.
Same with Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. Although I think more people know Pennsylvania than Illinois since it played a pivotal role in our history, and Pittsburgh is on the other side.
I am not surprised by people not knowing Illinois. I only imagine the only states people know well are more of the vacation destination type ones like Hawaii, California, and Florida.
I mean come on do we really expect foreigneres to know much of our states? I am am geography nerd and know almost all the capitals of every country and every state, but the only countries where I know a significant amount of their states and provinces are the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Ecuador. US because I live here. Canada and Mexico because they are our neighbors. Brazil because I am planning a trip and researching it. Ecuador because I have been there about 8 times.
