The higher up you are in latitude the less sun you get in the winter, and in reverse as well for the Southern Hemisphere.

Bozeman, MT is listed as the sunniest city in Montana, with ~300 days of sunshine, but it does get pretty warm in the summer some years, i.e. over 100F for a few days. The mountains are close to the north and south, so getting out of the valley heat is fairly easy to do.
