I mean think about it, if your new to a country, would you want to even come to some of the most expensive areas in world? Even forget about real estate, just buying things and getting around can get pricey. (Although I do get it there are opportunities in those areas and might be members of that immigrant community already in place.)
And then when you visit places like Houston, Dallas, etc. a lot more diverse than you would think. It seems like there a lot more "beacons" out there so to speak. I know if I'm coming to a new country I'd want something cheaper, and work my way up to the expensive city.
Not sure what your definition of gateway is, but as a tourist or newcomer to the country LA and NY are two places you should visit as they are two very important places.
But to settle down, absolutely not the only places. So many options.
I just interviewed a person yesterday who came to the US from Turkey, and his landing spot was Austin.
He said he had researched and seen the rise of Austin's economy, so that was where he targeted. But, he is very open to relocation too, after having only been in Austin for 5 months or so.
We truly live in a global economy, where folks who are moving to the US have access to online info, and they utilize that to their advantage when moving here.
I also think it really depends on the country the person comes from too, and the folks they know and associate with, and gather their information on a city to land in, for the US.

^ This.
From a tourism perspective New York and LA are top choices for international visitors (rightfully so), but to relocate permanently to the US, there are plenty of other viable options. Although it's not perfectly cut & dry, and dependent on where people are coming from, their financial status, and what they seek.

Even before corona in 2018 Miami had a pretty good lead over Los Angeles in international visitors.
Uh, it's been that way for a long time already....you can fly from almost anywhere in the country to London nowadays. You can fly from Seattle to India, from Boston to Japan, from Atlanta to South Africa etc.
I created this thread last year and as you can see, LAX and JFK and EWR are major long haul gateway but so are many other airports these days.

Where did you get 7 for Miami? Out of MIA's 93 nonstop international routes I'm seeing 19 going to Europe and the Middle East alone in Jan. 2022. And 74 nonstop domestic.
