I’ve heard people from the Saint Louis area talk like this.

It’s definitely not true of Eastern Mass.

I agree with Marin, CA in the post above, and I'll add the following off the top of my head (suspecting that they may have been said already but I'm too lazy to look through the other pages)
Boroughs of NYC: especially Brooklyn
Bergen County NJ
Orange County CA
Oakland County MI
Montgomery County MD
Fairfax County VA
Westchester County NY
Cobb County GA
Bucks County PA
Loudoun County VA

Only if you live in places like St Pete or Clearwater Tampa Bay is definitely more relatable to people who live in places like Riverview, Safety Harbor or Citrus Park for example.

Don’t know if this was mentioned yet but in some areas like in NC a city/town/census-designated-area might span more than one county.

In other places like Philadelphia PA the city and county borders are identical.

I wouldn’t argue against most of that, but people don’t identify more with the individual counties which is what this thread pertains to. Maybe people in Northern Pinellas to some extent since there’s no real focal city, but people in Riverview for example aren’t identifying more with Hillsborough over Tampa or Riverview.

Not so much King County, WA as a whole but "South King" is a thing. Working-class, diverse, largely older suburbia, typically seen by the city as either dangerous or not worth paying attention to.

San Juan County of course, because it's literally a group of islands only accessible by ferry, and the few towns are way too small to have much of an identity.

Clark County, sort of. It's seen as more conservative than the rest of the Portland area --- it's repeatedly rejected efforts to extend the MAX over the river from Portland, it's more rural/less developed than other close-in counties, and it's in WA which has no income tax. So it attracts a certain kind of person within the region.

A minor league baseball team in suburban Chicago identifies itself as the Kane County Cougars.

Hawaii, where there are no governments below counties, e.g., Honolulu is a county encompassing O'ahu, not a city.

Virginia, where nobody lives in both a county and a city, and not very many people live in a county and a town. Several counties have charters preventing incorporation of towns.

DuPage County in west suburban Chicago had a stronger county identity than most, perhaps because its Republican machine was often the Illinois counterpoint to Chicago's Democratic machine. Even though Lake County, encompassing most of the North Shore, is wealthier, it doesn't seem to strongly define itself as oppositional to Chicago. A similar dynamic might be at play with Oakland County, Michigan.
