Agree with stick with the midwest.
Here’s another Kansas City, Missouri suburb, and a pretty desirable one at that:

There are others similar to this in the region. Townhouse duplexes are a common thing in KC. There’s always something coming up for rent in that price range.

I don't know if you're game to do this, but cleaning jobs pay more than food delivery services *and* would save a heck of a lot of gas and wear and tear on your vehicle as at most you'd be cleaning one, perhaps two places a night. And by places I mean offices, restaurants, and other places of business that contract out their cleaning needs.

The hours and pay would be consistent and you could arrange to do it at night or in the wee hours of the morning before work a few days a week to garner that extra grand a month. I've done it here and there myself to earn some extra cash. It's fairly mindless work--just put on your favorite tunes, clean, and go home when you're done.

If you buckle down and do it as many evenings per week as you can and earmark the money earned as being for only a move to a less expensive place to live, you could have enough saved for moving expenses in a matter of months.

I'd take a look at towns and cities that are slow-growers, or slightly stagnant in population. Those tend to have the cheaper/cheapest rents.

Specifically, I'd look into--

Ohio rust belt city suburbs in Akron, Cleveland, Dayton, Toledo

Michigan cities like Detroit suburbs, Lansing suburbs, Flint suburbs

Illinois cities like Rockford, Peoria, Springfield-areas outside of these cities

West Virginia city suburbs like Charleston, Huntington, Fairmont (a nice smaller town)

Kansas, Nebraska cities of Topeka, Wichita, Lincoln, etc and their suburbs

There are lots of options if you are pretty open.

Fort Wayne Indiana. The closer you are to the outskirts of the city, away from 27, the better.

I’m intimately familiar with these…one of my step daughters used to live there! Nice, safe suburban area and good schools. Flyover country does have something to offer.

Fishers, Indiana, centrally located in the Midwest, with easy access to other nearby cities. Much better economy for the cost of living compared to Kansas City:

Have you considered Texas?

Did a Zillow search and found a ton in Houston under $2000.

This one for example is a 3 bedroom 2 bath: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/9...28528544_zpid/

I checked the crime stats and that zip and neighboring zips got a B rating:

https://crimegrade.org/violent-crime-77064/

The first two I looked at were about $300 to $400 cheaper but those zip codes scored poorly on crime stats.

Houston still has excellent housing deals for a city its size but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. You may also want to try San Antonio.
